Tertiary implementation in teaching and private hospitals in Pakistan
Pakistan has a countrywide network of more than thirty teaching hospitals as well as three hundred private hospitals. Hospitals pose technical and managerial challenges for initiating and sustaining the DOTS programme because of their difference in organizational arrangement. There are no context specific guidelines for planning and implementing DOTS in teaching and private hospitals. This project aims to develop and pilot guidelines for planning, implementation and monitoring of DOTS in teaching and private hospitals. The implementation guidelines and tools were developed by a working group comprising relevant authorities. A method-mix research approach was used to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the guidelines. The replication of refined guidelines in other parts of the country will be made through the National Tuberculosis Programme and its partners. The experience will also be shared with other partner countries.
