Understanding TB-related stigma and discrimination in Nepal: A community perspective

Stigma and discrimination associated with TB place a major barrier to TB services, especially among poor and vulnerable groups. An early study on TB stigma and discrimination suggests that patient's self-disgrace remains high throughout treatment. Patients isolate themselves to avoid potential discrimination because of the high level of discrimination associated with TB in communities. Previous studies have focussed on TB patients' descriptions of stigma and discrimination, and the causes of discrimination from the perspective of the community, including those who explicitly or implicitly discriminate against people who have or had TB. Community member perception of the risk of past or present TB patients was assessed, in order to understand the causes of TB-related discrimination and to develop appropriate interventions to reduce stigma and discrimination among the poor and vulnerable people.

This study used a qualitative research design, involving social scientists and public health specialists. Cross-sectional descriptive methods were used to understand views on TB related stigma, risks and discrimination. Community members, local leaders, community volunteers, professionals, students, housewives and ethnic representatives were included in focus group discussion.
